Recently, it has also been approved for weight loss, even in individuals without diabetes or high blood sugar. Semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which regulates appetite and digestion, making you feel fuller and less hungry.

Understanding How Semaglutide Works
Semaglutide is a prescription injection that can help with weight loss by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which plays a role in appetite and digestion. Semaglutide works in a few ways to help with weight loss. By connecting with GLP-1 receptors, it can make you feel full and less hungry. Instead of other invasive treatments or drugs that mimic hormones, semaglutide mimics a messenger molecule that is released from your stomach and tells your brain, “I’ve had enough food.”
By having enough GLP-1 in your bloodstream, your brain feels satisfied more often throughout the day and doesn’t get as many cravings for snacks, junk food, and treats. Ultimately, semaglutide helps make it easier to say no to snacks and unnecessary meals and helps you choose to only eat when you’re hungry.
Overweight people don’t just have high amounts of fat storage in their fat cells; they also have an excess of fat cells, which may lead to their brain and body becoming insensitive to signals of fullness. Fat cells release a molecule called leptin, and the more fat cells you have, the more leptin is circulating in your bloodstream at all times. Leptin is a signal molecule very much like GLP-1, in that it tells your brain when it should feel full and not hungry, but when you have too much Leptin in your blood, your brain starts ignoring the signals of fullness! It’s like hearing constant nagging that you’re full; you eventually start ignoring it and eating anyways, even though your body hormones are telling you to stop. As a person gets more obese, it actually becomes a biological challenge to feel full!
That’s where semaglutide comes in! It’s a new signal molecule that acts like leptin and actually succeeds in telling your brain to stop eating and feel full!
This sense of “fullness” is also called satisfaction and has often been associated with feeling content, happy, satisfied, and good. Often times, when people lose weight and their body becomes receptive to the signal molecules of satiety, it also helps make it easier to quit smoking, quick drugs, and other addictive behaviors because the brain is more easily able to feel satisfied and good.
